Sam Carrick - Born Social

I’m responsible for…

Helping to turn strategy into creative. My role is all about bridging the gap between the insight and the execution, working on an array of different clients, projects and pitches.

I work closely with…

Both the strategy team and the creative team. Making sure we’re working in tandem is absolutely key to delivering my role well, the strategic response to a problem and the creative output needs to be one succinct journey, not two separate things. This has been extra challenging over the past 12 months, but the pandemic has challenged us to think outside the box in terms of how we communicate and brainstorm ideas.

The best part of my role is…

Seeing an idea that you conjured up (inside your bedroom) come to life in the most amazing way. We have a wonderfully talented in-house team of creatives who nail brief after brief and sometimes take your idea and run with it, in a direction that you never even thought about. It can be really inspiring and really rewarding.

My *condensed* career story so far…

I chose advertising at uni because I felt like it was an industry that had loads of career options that would allow me to make a living out of being creative. My background is in hospitality marketing mainly, but design has always been my passion and main creative hard skill which has allowed me to freelance over the years. I moved from Newcastle to London in 2014 to join Born and I’ve never looked back since.

My dream brand to work with is...

When I heard rumours of the UK and Ireland putting a bid in for the World Cup 2030, I just thought how amazing that would be to cover. But generally, I’ve worked with so many brands across all industries, so to pick one is tough. I think I just love working with forward-thinking brands who allow us to try new things, express ourselves and occasionally take risks.

The most memorable moment at Born is...

It’s between meeting Roberto Carlos and watching him try and recreate that 1997 goal against France or going to Snowbombing Festival with Kopparberg. I can’t call it.

My guilty pleasure on social…

Facebook. I love seeing how my relatives and people who don’t have any interest or connection to the industry use the platform. It’s very different to what we think.

The social platform I couldn’t live without...

Twitter. I’ve got a gold medal in doom scrolling. And by doom scrolling I specifically mean reading about Newcastle United’s demise.

Right now, I’m binging…

I’m rewatching Mad Men actually. I used to be obsessed with it pre-Born so it’s really interesting watching it now, having 6 years London agency experience. Aside from that, Bradley Walsh’s The Chase has helped to get us through this third lockdown.

Describe working at Born in three words…

Exciting. Inclusive. Collaborative.

My side hustle...

I’d love to own a pub at some point. Little boozer, sells proper beer, seasonal menu, football on the tele. Lovely.
