Our ‘Get To Know Me’ series gives you a behind the scenes look at the lives of our social-savvy experts and what it’s like to work at Born Social, from their proudest moments to their dream clients, it’s all here.

Today, meet Matthew, a Social Media Manager. Matthew has been here for just over two-and-a-half years, and works on clients such as Nando’s, Tinder, and Mars.

Born Social Social Media Manager

I’m responsible for…

Sitting pretty centrally whilst working with a variety of our clients, managing the day-to-day operations. This involves constant communication with both my clients and colleagues, reporting, community management, pitching, and ensuring that strategies that have been put in place by our wonderful Strategy team are adhered to. More recently, I’ve been in charge of brand-building, and cultivating a strong tone-of-voice on social for some household names that have really excited me.

I work closely with…

Almost everyone on the team in some capacity, which is one of the reasons why I love my role! In particular, I work very closely with most of the incredibly talented Creative team, who often help bring our most exciting and industry-leading ideas to life, and the Account Directors, who help to keep us one step ahead of the game on social at all times.

The best part of my role is…

The sheer versatility of it - no day is the same. The opportunity to work with such an eclectic mixture of brands has really enhanced my skills in so many capacities, and sparks creativity on a daily basis.

In particular, I have a strong passion for getting stuck into new and exciting projects for clients; whether it be for existing clients or prospective ones, it’s incredibly fulfilling to see the fruition of our work live for everyone to see, or working with a new team that brings exciting challenges for us to help overcome.

My *condensed* career story so far…

After graduating from university a few years ago, I had the opportunity to help forge the prospective social media output for a very well-known chain of coffeehouses, whilst working as a freelance Social Media Coordinator for a local record label. After doing this for around a year and a half, I sought the bright lights of London, and came across Born Social whilst looking for new opportunities.

I got the job at Born initially working remotely as a Community Manager, and after a few months, I was brought onto the team full-time as a Social Media Manager. Now, I find myself on secondment working for one of our largest brands, with hopefully many exciting opportunities at Born just around the corner in 2021.

My dream brand to work with is...

I’d love to start working more with brands in the Arts and Creative Industries, namely the likes of record labels, or audio/media companies. You want just one? Spotify.

The proudest moment for me at Born is...

Achieving two ‘Born firsts’ has been incredibly pleasing for me, in that I was extended a full-time role on the team after working part-time, remotely, and then having started an exciting secondment opportunity a few months ago. It’s fair to say that I’ve forged a pretty unique path at Born so far, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities I’ve been provided that have allowed this to happen.

The most memorable moment at Born is...

When Nando’s launched ‘Nando’s Yard’ last year, there were many memorable days over that three-week period. The unique and exciting challenges of covering their live events for social has fuelled my passion for doing more of this in the future, and there were multiple ‘pinch-me’ moments in being able to interview and photograph/film incredibly talented musicians, artists, and comedians, where I couldn’t quite believe that I had the opportunity to do this as part of my chosen career.

My guilty pleasure on social…

Discovering passionate and acutely specific communities I had no idea existed, namely through my TikTok algorithm occasionally throwing me rogue curveballs. I’ve found my recent calling in one that celebrates banal, yet exquisitely crafted British reality TV shows from the early 2000s.

The social platform I couldn’t live without...

Up until relatively recently, I would’ve said Twitter had it in the bag, but TikTok has been challenging it. I’ll stick with my ol’ reliable for now, but really, any platform that has me engrossed until the early hours of the morning has cemented a place firmly in my heart.

Right now, I’m binging…

My increased level of hibernation in 2020 has led to me seeking out classic favourites out of comfort. Currently, that’s in the form of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, because there is nothing more life-affirming than a crossover of high school melodrama, delightfully theatrical villainry, and ‘90s fashion. I intend on wearing nothing else but crushed velvet, dungarees, and low-waisted leopard print trousers in 2021.

Describe working at Born in three words…

Dynamic. Thrilling. Life-changing.

My side hustle...

Like your typical 27-year-old man, I have a strong passion for ceramics. However, what I think truly sets me apart from this heavily saturated group is the level of deception I bring to the artform - my recent passion has involved creating bowls that look like fruit, but the dramatic twist is that they’re not actually fruit at all! My Etsy empire will be booming shortly, mark my words.
